Huge Rat Almost the Size of a Cat Caught in the UK
It became known that the largest rat was caught in the UK. This is reported by The Independent.
In England, in a house in the area of Normanby in North Yorkshire, pest control specialists caught a rat 22 inches long (about 56 centimeters).
Experts claim it is the largest rat ever caught in the UK.
According to the publication, members of the county council, who were sent a picture of the rat, said the rodent was “almost the size of a small cat”.
The Independent notes that the previous largest UK rat was caught in November 2018 in the town of Bournemouth in the county of Dorset.
Then the rodent was 21 inches long (just over 53 centimeters).
The discovery quickly sparked discussion online, with many people surprised by the rodent’s enormous size.
Photos of the rat spread rapidly across social media, where users compared it to a cat and called it something out of a horror movie.
Pest control experts say unusually large rats are rare, but not impossible. Access to food waste, mild winters, and urban environments can create ideal conditions for rodents to grow larger and survive longer than expected. Even so, specialists admitted this particular rat was exceptional.
Local residents said they were shocked after hearing about the capture, especially given that the animal was found inside a residential property.
The case has once again raised concerns about rat populations in parts of the UK and the problems they can cause in homes and neighborhoods.
While sightings of rats are not unusual in Britain, one of this size is something few people ever expect to see. For many, it is a reminder of what can be hiding much closer than anyone imagines.
