China unveils concept for giant flying-wing aircraft designed to carry 800 passengers

Chinese aerospace researchers are developing an ambitious concept for a giant passenger aircraft capable of carrying more than 800 people. The proposed aircraft uses an unusual flying-wing design. It replaces the traditional tube-shaped fuselage with a wide, blended structure.

The concept was presented by researchers from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC), according to the South China Morning Post. If such an aircraft enters service, it could carry far more passengers than today’s largest commercial airliners.

For comparison, the Airbus A380 is currently the world’s largest passenger aircraft. It typically carries around 500 to 550 passengers in a standard configuration. The Chinese flying-wing aircraft could potentially increase that number to 800 or more.

The proposed design is enormous. Researchers described an aircraft approximately 85 meters wide and 43 meters long. Its wingspan would be around 1.6 times greater than that of the American B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.

The B-2 is another well-known aircraft based on a flying-wing configuration. However, the Chinese concept would be designed for commercial passenger travel.

Unlike a conventional airliner, the flying-wing aircraft would combine the fuselage, wings, and tail into one large aerodynamic structure. Much of its internal volume could be used for passengers, cargo, or equipment.

This configuration could offer important aerodynamic advantages. A smoother overall shape may reduce drag. It could also improve the aircraft’s lift-to-drag ratio.

Greater aerodynamic efficiency could allow a plane to travel farther while using less energy. That is one of the main reasons researchers continue to study flying-wing designs.

The original concept was reportedly designed for about 250 passengers. Researchers later increased the proposed capacity to more than 800. This turned it into a potential future competitor to the largest passenger jets ever built.

However, the China 800-passenger aircraft remains a research concept. No full-size prototype has been constructed. Many major engineering challenges would need to be solved before it could enter commercial service.

Wind tunnel tests show promising results

CARDC researchers have already tested a steel scale model. The model was built at 1:52 of the proposed aircraft’s full size. It was examined inside a transonic wind tunnel at speeds ranging from Mach 0.4 to Mach 0.8.

The tests produced a maximum lift-to-drag ratio of about 20 at speeds below Mach 0.7. At Mach 0.8, the figure was approximately 17.6.

These results suggest the unusual flying-wing passenger plane could have promising aerodynamic characteristics. However, wind-tunnel testing is only one step in aircraft development. A full-scale aircraft would still require years of additional research and testing.

China is also pursuing several other major aviation projects. These include the planned C929 long-range wide-body aircraft, expected to carry around 280 passengers. The country is also working on the proposed C949 supersonic passenger aircraft.

The 800-seat flying-wing concept is part of a broader effort to expand China’s role in advanced civil aviation. Whether this enormous aircraft will ever leave the drawing board remains unknown.

Still, the project offers a glimpse at what future ultra-large passenger aircraft could look like. A flying-wing design carrying 800 people would represent a major departure from today’s conventional airliners.
