Mark Zuckerberg’s Superyacht Accused of Ignoring a Call for Help
Mark Zuckerberg’s superyacht Launchpad became the focus of controversy after a small boat requested assistance off the coast of Alaska.
The 21-meter boat had run out of fuel and eventually ran aground while its crew tried contacting the nearby superyacht. According to the Alaska Beacon, the crew of Launchpad did not respond to the request.
The stranded boat was eventually assisted by the Wilderness Legacy cruise ship, which was operating nearby at the time.
Passenger Michael Love said the captain told people on board that Zuckerberg’s yacht had ignored a radio request for help. According to Love, some passengers reacted by booing the billionaire.
However, the incident was later clarified by the U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska Marine Exchange. They said the small boat had not issued an official distress call.
The communication was reportedly a request for assistance rather than an emergency requiring an immediate rescue response.
A spokesman for Mark Zuckerberg later said the Meta founder and his family were not aboard Launchpad during the incident.
The episode nevertheless drew attention because of the yacht’s famous owner and the circumstances surrounding the request for assistance.
The incident also highlights an important distinction between a maritime distress call and a routine request for help. A vessel asking another boat for assistance does not necessarily indicate that passengers face an immediate danger.
For now, the Alaska yacht incident remains a curious episode involving one of the world’s most recognizable billionaires and his superyacht Launchpad.
