China Finds Mysterious Moon Iron That Shouldn’t Be There

Something deeply unexpected has emerged from the dust of the Moon’s far side. Researchers analyzed soil returned to Earth by China’s Chang’e-6 mission. During analysis, they stumbled upon an unusual form of metallic iron. This material was never before identified in natural lunar soil.

The discovery presents an extraordinary scientific riddle. The material is known as gamma iron, or γ-Fe. Normally, it requires scorching temperatures to remain stable. It typically exists between 912 and 1,394 degrees Celsius.

As it cools, its crystal structure transforms into ordinary iron. Yet, these microscopic particles were found preserved on the freezing lunar surface. The results of the study were published in the journal PNAS, IFLScience writes.

How could such a structure survive billions of years in space?

Scientists believe the answer lies in ancient cosmic collisions. A massive object once struck the South Pole–Aitken Basin. This intense energy melted lunar rock instantly. The process created tiny droplets of molten glass. These glass beads cooled down at blinding speed.

Traces of carbon and surrounding glass caught the metal mid-transformation. They trapped it in a permanent freeze frame. As a result, the fragile structure survived frozen in time.

Even more intriguing, researchers believe this metal acts as a time capsule. Scientists examined individual gamma-iron particles under advanced electron microscopes. The particles formed stable magnetic vortices. They reacted consistently to external magnetic fields. This suggests they recorded the exact magnetic conditions of the ancient Moon.

For decades, researchers wrestled with questions about the Moon’s vanished magnetic shield. They questioned how strong it was and how long it lasted. While this metal does not solve the mystery outright, it provides an entirely new window into the past.

What makes the finding truly remarkable is the scale of these clues. They lay hidden inside particles far smaller than a grain of sand.

A substance that should have vanished as it cooled managed to endure. It survived for billions of years. Now, it silently carries a record of the violent forces that shaped the lunar surface.

It was previously reported that a long-standing mystery about the Moon’s formation may have finally been solved. A new study by scientists claims that our satellite emerged just five hours after a gigantic collision.
