US military confirms it has space weapons already deployed in orbit
The United States has acknowledged for the first time that it already has weapons operating in orbit. The revelation came directly from the Secretary of the Air Force.
Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber conference in Maryland, Troy Meink said the United States now has “space-control weapons” in orbit. According to him, these systems are capable of defending American forces against hostile adversaries.
The statement immediately attracted attention because Washington has usually avoided publicly discussing whether it possesses operational weapons in space. Officials have often cited national security concerns when asked about such capabilities.
Meink did not explain what systems he was referring to. He provided no information about their number, location, capabilities or intended targets.
Experts therefore remain uncertain about the nature of the weapons. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation suggested they could involve electronic warfare or space-based jamming rather than missiles or other kinetic weapons.
Kinetic weapons could destroy satellites and create large amounts of orbital debris. American officials have repeatedly warned about the dangers of producing debris during military operations in space.
The announcement could also have wider consequences. Experts believe openly acknowledging American orbital weapons may encourage China and Russia to reveal or demonstrate their own counterspace capabilities.
Meink also announced that prototypes for a new space-based satellite constellation are expected to launch this month. He said space-based interceptors being developed for the Golden Dome missile defense system are now “flight ready.”
The announcement offers no clear picture of what the United States actually has in orbit. But the public acknowledgment itself marks a significant change in how Washington talks about military capabilities in space.
