Strange Natural Phenomenon Turns Argentina’s Sky Into “Snow drifts”

The sky over Argentina recently took on an extraordinary appearance when huge cloud formations seemed to hang like melting snowdrifts above the ground.

The unusual phenomenon was captured after a powerful storm moved through the region. The footage shows rows of rounded structures hanging beneath a much larger storm cloud.

These formations are known as mammatus clouds. They develop on the underside of large thunderstorm clouds, particularly beneath the flat anvil-shaped tops of powerful storms.

Unlike ordinary clouds, mammatus formations appear as a series of bulging pockets or pouches. Under the right conditions, individual structures can become enormous, reaching around one kilometer in size.

The strange shapes form when pockets of moisture and ice-rich air descend through the atmosphere beneath a storm. This movement can pull parts of the cloud downward and create the distinctive rounded formations.

The process is linked to instability in the atmosphere and can produce dramatic patterns that look almost unnatural from the ground.

Mammatus clouds are not a separate type of storm. They are usually associated with powerful thunderstorms and can appear after the most intense part of a storm has passed.

Because of their unusual appearance, mammatus clouds are sometimes mistaken for rare atmospheric anomalies or even unexplained phenomena. Their strange shapes can look almost artificial, especially when the formations stretch across a huge section of the sky.

Scientists, however, consider mammatus a natural atmospheric phenomenon. Their appearance is unusual, but it does not require an extraordinary explanation.

Still, seeing hundreds of enormous cloud pockets hanging beneath a storm can be one of the most surreal sights the atmosphere produces.
