Save Earth: China Prepares Bold Asteroid Deflection Mission

China is preparing one of its most ambitious space missions. Before the end of the decade, the country plans to send a spacecraft to deliberately collide with a near-Earth asteroid.The goal is to test whether humanity can one day change the path of a dangerous object before it threatens Earth.The project will become China’s first independent planetary defense mission.

Scientists say it is designed to improve future technologies that could protect the planet from potentially hazardous asteroids.The target is the near-Earth asteroid 2015 XF261, discovered in 2015.

Researchers estimate that it is about 30 meters (98 feet) across, although its exact size is still uncertain. The asteroid will pass safely about 6.9 million kilometers (4.3 million miles) from Earth in 2029 or 2030. It poses no threat to the planet.

The mission will launch aboard a Long March-3B/E rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. Two spacecraft will travel together.

One probe will observe the asteroid before and after the impact. The second will intentionally crash into the object.The impact is expected to occur at more than 9 kilometers per second (5.6 miles per second). That equals roughly 32,400 km/h (20,100 mph) and is about 26 times the speed of sound.

China aims to build on NASA’s DART success

The experiment follows NASA’s successful DART mission, which changed the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. However, Chinese researchers say their mission has a different objective. They want to collect more detailed measurements and improve models that predict how asteroids react after high-speed impacts.

Scientists will study how the collision changes the asteroid’s motion. They will also examine its shape, rotation, internal structure, and surface composition. Every piece of data will help improve future asteroid deflection missions.

The mission has four main goals. The spacecraft must hit the asteroid precisely. Researchers must confirm that its orbit changes. They also need to measure the effects of the collision and prove that such tests can be carried out safely.

Planetary defense has become increasingly important in recent years. Astronomers continue to discover thousands of near-Earth asteroids. Almost all of them are harmless. Even so, experts agree that humanity should be prepared if a truly dangerous object is ever found.

If the mission succeeds, China will become only the second country after the United States to deliberately alter the orbit of a celestial body. Scientists believe the knowledge gained could play an important role in protecting Earth from future asteroid impacts.
