Mysterious Town Found Beneath the Sea off Britain After 700 Years
Several hundred metres off the coast of Cromer in Norfolk, divers have been exploring a place that once belonged to a completely different landscape.
Below the waves lie remnants linked to Shipden, a medieval settlement that gradually disappeared as the North Sea advanced along the coast. New underwater surveys have now documented about 25 man-made features at the site.
The discovery was made by volunteer divers from the Anglian branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club. Calm summer conditions gave them unusually clear views of the seabed. They photographed stone and flint structures and recorded their positions for further study.
Shipden was already an established settlement when it appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086. The record listed 117 residents, a harbour, two churches and other resources belonging to the community.
Over the following centuries, coastal erosion steadily changed the area. Shipden eventually disappeared from historical records, while the name Cromer became associated with the settlement that survived nearby.
Some of the underwater structures may have been built as an attempt to slow the advancing sea. Researchers are also considering whether the remains could be connected with a pier authorised in 1390. However, neither explanation has been proven.
The dives have also raised questions about an old local legend. For generations, people in Cromer have spoken about a submerged church whose bell could supposedly be heard during storms.
The divers did not find a structure that could be identified as a church. Some scattered flint remains were recorded, but researchers believe they may have been disturbed by a later event.

The team is continuing to compare the underwater discoveries with medieval documents. Three-dimensional models are also being created from the photographs. These efforts could eventually provide a clearer picture of what Shipden looked like before the sea claimed it.
