Massive Deep-Sea Whale Graveyard Found in Indian Ocean
There are still places on Earth that remain almost completely unexplored. One of them lies deep beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean, where scientists recently stumbled upon a discovery that surprised even experienced researchers.
During a series of dives southwest of Australia, a Chinese expedition found large numbers of whale bones scattered across the seabed. The remains were not concentrated in a single location. Instead, they appeared across a broad area, suggesting that whales have been ending up there for an extremely long time.
The discovery was made using the deep-sea submersible Fendouzhe. As cameras moved across the ocean floor, researchers continued spotting more bones. What initially looked like an isolated find gradually turned into something much larger.
According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the area may have been collecting whale remains for more than five million years. If true, some of the oldest bones on the site could date back to a time when the world looked very different from today.
No one can answer that question with certainty.
One theory suggests that the unusual shape of the seabed may be responsible. Parts of the region resemble a giant underwater basin capable of trapping organic material carried by ocean currents. Over countless generations, bones may have gradually accumulated there.
Another possibility is much simpler. Whales are known to return to productive feeding grounds. If this region offered a reliable food source for thousands of years, large numbers of animals may have visited the same waters again and again.
Eventually, some of them died there.
The area where the remains were found is located near the Diamantina Fracture Zone, one of the deepest parts of the Indian Ocean. Some bones were documented at depths approaching 6,800 meters. Very few people have ever seen this landscape with their own eyes.
Researchers believe the visible remains could be only a fraction of what is actually present. Over millions of years, layers of sediment have slowly covered older skeletons. As a result, many more bones may still be hidden beneath the seafloor.
Discoveries like this are valuable because whale skeletons contain information about ancient species and changing ocean conditions. Every bone can provide clues about how marine life evolved over long periods of time.
For now, scientists plan to continue studying the region. The latest expedition answered one question but created several new ones. Exactly how many whales ended up there remains unknown, and researchers suspect the true scale of the graveyard may be far larger than anyone currently realizes.
