Namibia is on the verge of famine due to severe drought
It has become known that the Namibian authorities have decided to shoot wild animals in order to distribute their meat to needy local residents.
Now many African countries are experiencing a severe drought, and their citizens, especially in rural areas, lack of water and food.
It is reported that the Ministry of Environment plans to kill 723 animals. These include 300 zebras, 83 elephants, 60 buffalo, 30 hippos and various species of antelope.
The shooting will take place in parks and suburban areas where wild animals have no water resources and lack pasture.
Professional hunters commissioned by the government have already killed 157 large herbivores. Needy residents have already received more than 56 tons of meat.
The Environment Ministry has said that competition for food and water between humans and animals is inevitable in such a drought.
The UN estimates that the current drought in the southern part of the African continent is the worst in decades.
Some 68 million Africans are on the brink of starvation. Namibia has exhausted its food reserves by 84% in the last month.
