How astronauts in outer space hand-caught satellites
In 1984, the Westar 6 and Palapa B2 satellites were in the wrong orbit due to upper stage failure.
Both satellites were commercial satellites and their owners suffered huge losses. To avoid losses, NASA offered a unique solution: to return the satellites to Earth for repair.
The astronauts used a maneuvering module (MMU), which allows them to move freely in space without tethers.
In free flight, they approached the satellites, which were spinning chaotically, and attached special transportation devices to them.
The satellites were then placed in the cargo bay of the shuttle Discovery.
