The work comes to the buyer with a certificate of authenticity and instructions on how to replace the banana when it rots.
The buyer of the banana was Chinese crypto entrepreneur and art collector Justin Sun.
At the auction, he offered the highest amount and beat out six competitors.
An entrepreneur from China called the installation a cultural phenomenon, linking the worlds of art, memes and the cryptocurrency community.
He said he plans to eat a banana as part of this unique artistic experience in the near future.
