Do NOT Send Messages Into Space or Reply to UFO Signals

What would happen if Earth received a real message from an extraterrestrial civilization? Scientists say the answer would not come immediately. Under updated SETI recommendations, no reply should be sent until the discovery has been verified and discussed internationally.

The International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) has revised its first-contact guidelines for the first time since 2010. The changes reflect major advances in astronomy, radio telescopes, artificial intelligence, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

The updated document focuses on one simple idea. If researchers detect what appears to be a genuine alien signal, they should not rush to answer it. Instead, the evidence should first be carefully checked and independently confirmed.

After that, the findings should be shared with the international scientific community. The recommendations also call for consultations through the United Nations and other representative international organizations before any response is considered.

Some reports have described this as a ban on contacting aliens. That is not entirely accurate. The IAA cannot legally prevent anyone from sending a message into space. Its document is a scientific recommendation rather than a binding law. The goal is to avoid a hasty decision that could affect all of humanity.

Researchers believe no single scientist, observatory, private company, or government should decide how Earth responds to a confirmed extraterrestrial signal. If first contact ever happens, the consequences could extend far beyond one country. That is why the academy recommends a coordinated international approach.

The revised protocols also place strong emphasis on transparency. Any unusual signal must be examined from every possible angle. Scientists need to rule out equipment failures, natural cosmic sources, or human-made interference before announcing a discovery.

SETI has spent decades listening for possible signs of intelligent life. So far, every unusual signal has eventually received a natural explanation or turned out to be technical interference. No confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence has ever been found.

Even so, researchers believe the chances of making a major discovery are increasing. New observatories are becoming more powerful every year. If humanity ever receives a genuine message from another civilization, scientists want clear procedures to be in place before anyone considers sending a reply.

Previously, cryptic statements were reported from a retired US intelligence veteran. He revealed the locations of alleged alien bases hidden in remote mountainous areas around the world.
