Scientists Detect Mysterious Signal While Searching for Alien Life
An international team of astronomers searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence has discovered an unusual radio signal from the direction of a distant planetary system. Its distinctive characteristics immediately attracted scientific attention, particularly because the system contains a super-Earth located near its star’s potentially habitable zone.
The discovery emerged during the testing of new specialized software developed to identify possible technological signals from distant worlds. Researchers applied the program to archived observations collected in 2021 by China’s enormous FAST radio telescope.
The international team examined data covering 33 planetary systems, looking for unusual radio transmissions that might otherwise remain hidden in astronomical noise. The Daily Mail reports on this mysterious fact.
One particularly interesting discovery received the designation NBS 260108. It appeared in the direction of K2-155, a star located approximately 238 light-years from Earth. The system contains three known super-Earths, but one particular planet makes this discovery especially intriguing.

The planet K2-155d is particularly interesting to astronomers because of its position around its parent star. Its radius is approximately 1.6 times greater than Earth’s, and it completes one orbit every 40.7 days. Most importantly, it lies near the star’s habitable zone, where conditions could potentially allow liquid water to exist.
This makes the direction of the newly discovered signal especially fascinating. Scientists are searching for possible technosignatures, meaning detectable traces of technology created by intelligent civilizations. Radio transmissions remain among the most promising possibilities because they can travel enormous distances through space.
The NBS 260108 signal displayed several characteristics associated with artificial radio transmissions. Its energy was concentrated within an extremely narrow frequency range, rather than spreading across a broad spectrum. Researchers also noticed that its frequency gradually decreased, suggesting a possible Doppler shift caused by movement between the transmitter and Earth.
Another remarkable detail came from the telescope’s unusual observation system. FAST uses 19 separate receiver beams, allowing astronomers to monitor several nearby regions of the sky simultaneously. During the observation, the mysterious signal appeared only in the beam directed toward K2-155. The other 18 beams recorded no comparable transmission.

Researchers also noticed an unusual difference between the telescope’s two polarization channels. The signal was clearly visible in the YY channel but completely absent from XX. This distinctive pattern adds another interesting detail to an already unusual astronomical observation.
The discovery demonstrates how modern technology is transforming the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Instead of examining individual signals manually, researchers can now use advanced software to process enormous archives of radio telescope observations. This allows scientists to identify faint transmissions and investigate characteristics that might previously have gone unnoticed.
The research team plans to refine the analysis methods and study the original recordings from all 19 receiving beams of the FAST super telescope. Such comparisons could help determine the precise location and possible movement of the mysterious radio source.

For now, NBS 260108 remains an intriguing candidate in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Its unusual frequency, apparent direction and detection by only one receiver beam make it particularly interesting. Whether this mysterious transmission originated from a distant technological source remains one of the questions astronomers hope to answer through future observations.
It was previously reported that UFO researchers reported a giant blue object spotted near several supernovae. Experts claim this mysterious object may be a massive alien spacecraft. The observation was made in the direction of Leo Minor, a relatively small constellation in the Northern Hemisphere.
