AI Error Nearly Triggered US Operation Against Chinese Vessel
An artificial intelligence error inside the US military nearly led to an operation against a Chinese vessel after a false assessment identified its cargo as being linked to a nuclear weapons program.
The incident reportedly happened in spring 2026, during the war between the United States and Iran. According to CNN, an intelligence report circulating among American military personnel claimed that the Chinese ship was carrying materials associated with nuclear weapons.
The information was taken seriously enough to trigger preparations for an interception. Armed US personnel were reportedly getting ready to board the vessel, while military aircraft were already in the air.
The mistake began when an analyst working with US Special Operations Command used an AI chatbot to examine intelligence about the ship’s cargo manifest. The system combined publicly available information with classified signals intelligence and incorrectly identified the materials.
The analyst then used AI again to turn the erroneous assessment into a conventional-looking intelligence report. The document was circulated through military channels, where its conclusions were treated as credible information.
The mistake was discovered only when officials carried out a deeper review shortly before the planned operation. They found that the chatbot had misidentified the cargo, and the interception was called off.
CNN could not establish what the vessel was actually carrying. The network also reported that the specific AI system used by the analyst has not been identified. It remains unclear whether it was a commercial chatbot or a government-developed system.
The episode highlights a serious problem with using generative AI for intelligence work. A system can produce a convincing answer while reaching a completely incorrect conclusion. If that conclusion is then placed into an official report, the original error can become much harder to recognize.
The incident is particularly significant because the US military is rapidly expanding its use of artificial intelligence for intelligence analysis, operational planning and other military tasks. In this case, however, the final decision was still made by people, and additional human scrutiny ultimately prevented the planned operation from taking place.
