1936 and 1943 Photos Fuel Speculation About Time Travelers
Two photographs taken decades ago have recently attracted attention for an unusual reason. In both images, people appear to be holding objects that look surprisingly similar to modern mobile phones.
The first photograph was taken in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1943. It shows a group of people during World War II, but one man stands out from the crowd. He is holding a small unidentified object close to his ear. The shape and position of the object immediately reminded social media users of someone holding a mobile phone.
The photograph remained in the family archive of Kristjan Hoffman for decades. He eventually published it on Facebook in 2016. More than 80 years later, the image resurfaced online and once again triggered speculation about its mysterious detail.
The second photograph comes from New York and dates from 1936. It also shows a person holding an object near his head in a way that looks strangely familiar today. The similarities between the two photographs have helped fuel an old internet mystery.

Some people believe the objects could be evidence of people carrying technology from the future. Others have suggested more ordinary explanations. The objects could have been radios, hearing devices, watches or other everyday items that simply look unusual from a modern perspective.
There is no way to identify either object with certainty from the photographs alone. Yet that uncertainty is what keeps the time traveler theory alive.
Both images capture completely ordinary moments from the past. But when viewed through modern eyes, small details suddenly look as though they belong to another era. Perhaps both photographs have perfectly simple explanations. Or perhaps the people captured in them were holding something that we still cannot identify.
For now, the two images leave behind the same intriguing question: were these just ordinary objects, or could they really be glimpses of people carrying technology from the future?
