Five Colombians Fighting for Russia Surrender to Ukraine
Five Colombians fighting on the Russian side headed toward Ukrainian positions and laid down their arms. Their surrender was recorded by a Ukrainian drone.
The unusual episode began when a Colombian mercenary had previously decided to surrender. After Ukrainian intelligence services helped him contact his relatives, his family was able to reach his brother, who was also serving in the Russian army.
This conversation changed the situation for several other foreign recruits. The brother convinced four of his fellow Colombians to follow the same path and surrender.
The group moved toward Ukrainian positions, with a drone tracking their route from above. Their arrival was spotted by a soldier from Ukraine’s 33rd Mechanized Brigade, call sign “Kuzya.”
Five Colombians reportedly said they were recruited in Russia with the promise of service far from the front. They later realized they could instead be sent on dangerous assault missions.
They also said their continued service in the Russian army made them fear severe punishment if they attempted to leave the country.
For the five Colombians, surrender ultimately became a way to escape the battlefield and save their lives, rather than die for dictator Putin.
