Three Gorges Dam in China
A unique engineering solution: the Three Gorges Dam, located in China.
The dam on the Yangtze River is not only the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, but also a unique navigation complex.
It is equipped with a five-stage system of locks 1.6 kilometers long. Each lock is 280 meters long, 34 meters wide and 5 meters deep.
This allows ships weighing up to 10,000 tons to overcome a height difference of 113 meters in 4 hours.
But the most impressive thing is the vertical ship elevator, one of the largest in the world. It can lift ships weighing up to 3 thousand tons in 40 minutes.
The ship elevator is a huge movable platform 120 meters long and 18 meters wide, which works like a giant elevator.
