Giant Asian hornets: a buzzing delicacy

Far from being shunned in some parts of Asia, giant Asian hornets are purposefully harvested for gourmet consumption.

These large insects, reaching up to 5 cm in length, have become popular for their unique flavor and nutritional value.

However, collecting them requires special skills and equipment, as hornets can be very dangerous.

Their sting causes severe pain and can be fatal to humans. It is believed that 30–40 stings can kill a healthy adult.

Despite this, hornets are highly prized in the cuisines of Japan and China. Hornets are rich in protein and have a crunchy texture.

In Nagano Prefecture, Japan, they are pickled and added to rice dishes, while in China, they are fried with sauce.
