Fighting has begun on the Cambodia-Thailand border
Tensions flared up back in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed due to fighting in the disputed territory.
Yesterday, Bangkok recalled its ambassador from Phnom Penh over three soldiers blowing up mines in disputed territories near the border. That territory, by agreement, is supposed to be safe.
Cambodia said it had downgraded diplomatic relations to the lowest level.
Thailand today accused Cambodia of firing multiple rocket launchers at its positions, closed the border and retaliated by striking two military installations with F-16s.
The Cambodian Defense Ministry says the firing was purely in self-defense and blames Thailand for the “brutal and illegal aggression.”
Thailand claims the Cambodian military used drones for reconnaissance and was preparing to move heavy weapons.
It also shelled a hospital and wounded three civilians. At this time, heavy fighting broke out on the border.
Tensions between the two countries have been building for months.
Cambodia has already banned the import of fruits and vegetables from Thailand, as well as the screening of Thai movies.
Many checkpoints along the border between the two countries have been suspended or restricted.
