Belarusian opposition activist released
Belarusian opposition activist Sergei Tikhanovski was released after the visit of Trump’s special envoy Kellogg. This is reported by the Belarusian media.
Activists Natallia Dulina and Zaevski Hanad, as well as 12 other political prisoners of the Belarusian regime, were also released.
“Thanks to President Trump, 14 prisoners from Belarus were released today. Thanks to the Lithuanian government for their cooperation and assistance,” tweeted John Cole, Deputy Special Representative Keith Kellogg.
Opposition politician Sergei Tikhanovsky became famous after his intention to run for president of Belarus in 2020.
The Central Election Commission refused to register him, and his wife, Sviatlana Tikhanovski became a candidate.
On May 29, 2020, Tikhanovski was detained, and in December 2021, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
He was charged with allegedly “organizing mass riots, inciting hatred, and obstructing the work of the CEC.”
In reality, these were protests against election fraud and the establishment of Lukashenka’s authoritarian regime.
Earlier, Lukashenka said during his meeting with Kellogg that the latter had made a lot of noise in the world by his arrival in Belarus.
According to the Belarusian media, the dictator also added that he hoped for a frank and open meeting and promised Kellogg security.
