Earth is Spinning Faster and World Time May be Changed
The Earth is rotating slightly faster than expected, and this unusual change could force scientists to rethink the way global time is measured. The British Financial Times reported this, citing a source.
The issue concerns leap seconds, tiny adjustments used to keep atomic clocks synchronized with the irregular rotation of our planet. International timekeepers are now preparing for a major change that could eventually remove these adjustments altogether.
For most people, the difference is impossible to notice. Modern technology, however, depends on extremely precise timing. Even a single second can create problems for computer networks, telecommunications and satellite systems.
Modern clocks no longer depend directly on the movement of the Sun. Instead, atomic clocks provide an exceptionally stable measurement based on the behavior of atoms.
Earth’s rotation is much less predictable. Atmospheric movements, ocean currents and processes deep inside the planet can slightly alter the speed at which Earth turns.
For decades, the general trend was toward a slower rotation. That meant scientists occasionally had to add a second to Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC.
The first leap second was introduced in 1972. Since then, 27 leap seconds have been added to UTC, with the most recent adjustment occurring in 2016.
Recently, however, Earth’s rotation has sometimes become unusually fast. If the trend creates a sufficiently large difference, timekeepers could theoretically need a negative leap second.
That would mean removing one second from the clock rather than adding one. Such an adjustment has never been made, creating concerns about how computer systems would handle it.
Many digital systems were designed with positive leap seconds in mind. A missing second could therefore cause unexpected errors in software and infrastructure that rely on continuous time signals.
Scientists and international standards organizations are now considering another solution. Instead of repeatedly correcting UTC, they could allow atomic time and Earth’s rotational time to drift apart gradually.
A draft proposal prepared for the General Conference on Weights and Measures would make UTC continuous from May 20, 2027. The proposed limit for the difference between UTC and Earth rotation time would eventually reach one hour.
This sounds dramatic, but the divergence would happen extremely slowly. Experts expect it could take many centuries before the difference becomes significant.
The decision is expected to be considered in Versailles in October 2026. If approved, it would represent one of the biggest changes to global timekeeping since leap seconds were introduced.
For everyday life, almost nothing would change. Computers and scientific systems, however, would gain a simpler and more predictable time standard.
It was previously reported that the Doomsday Clock was set at 85 seconds to midnight, which is the closest to the symbolic hour of the apocalypse in recorded history, amid the growing threat of nuclear war.
