A secretive US Navy special forces unit, Seal Team 6, is preparing to help Taiwan if China invades.
The special forces unit, which killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011,
Sources familiar with the training told the Financial Times.
The training has been underway for more than a year at the group’s headquarters in Virginia Beach, about 250km southeast of Washington, according to the source.
The training has been ramped up after Phil Davidson, the former commander of US Indo-Pacific, warned that China could attack Taiwan within six years.
A Pentagon spokesman confirmed to the FT that US forces are “preparing and training for a wide range of contingencies”.
Seal Team 6 is considered one of the most elite units in the US military.
Its tasks include operational and strategic reconnaissance at sea and in coastal areas.
They conduct reconnaissance and sabotage operations, combat terrorism, maritime piracy, the seizure of ships and hostages.
