It has been revealed that scientists have managed to uncover one of the most mysterious secrets of archaeology: how the inhabitants of Easter Island were able to move huge stone statues.
New research has shown that the moai were not dragged along the ground but literally “walked” to their installation sites, swaying from side to side. This was reported by the Daily Mail.
Using 3D modeling and experiments, researchers confirmed that the ancient inhabitants of Rapa Nui tied ropes to the statues and swung them in a zigzag motion.
This technique allowed a small group of people to move huge moai tens of meters without much effort.
“Once the statue starts swaying, it moves on its own. You just need to keep the rhythm,” explained Professor Carl Lippo of Binghamton University.
The shape and tilt of the statues, as it turned out, were designed specifically for this method of movement.
The wide D-shaped base and forward-shifted center of gravity made the movement stable and natural.
The discovery not only confirmed the authenticity of ancient legends claiming that the stone giants “walked by themselves” but also demonstrated the high level of engineering thought of the Rapa Nui people.
