Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will abdicate in January in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik. She stated this in her New Year’s address.
Margrethe II’s abdication will take place on January 14, which will mark exactly 52 years since she took the throne from her father, King Frederick IX.
“I had major back surgery in February this year. Everything went well thanks to the competence of the doctors who took care of me. Is it time for me to pass on the responsibility to the next generation.”
“I have decided that now is the right time. I will abdicate the throne and pass it on to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” Margrethe II said.
Margrethe II became Europe’s longest-serving monarch after the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
Throughout her life, Margrethe enjoyed wide support from the Danes, who loved her tactful and at the same time creative personality.
