Councils, to attract more tourists to Thailand, canceled the ban introduced in 1972 on the sale of alcohol. The rules will be in effect for half a year

Thailand Removes Daytime Alcohol Sales Ban: Continuous Service from 11 AM to Midnight to Attract More Tourists

The Thai government has introduced significant changes to alcohol sales regulations, primarily aimed at making the country more appealing to international visitors. Licensed venues can now serve alcoholic beverages without interruption from 11:00 AM until midnight, according to reports from AFP and other sources.

Additionally, customers will be allowed to finish their drinks within one hour after midnight. These updated rules are being implemented as a 180-day pilot program (six months), starting in December 2025, with the possibility of extension based on outcomes.

Background on Thailand’s Former Afternoon Alcohol Ban

The previous restriction prohibiting alcohol sales from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM had been in place since 1972—over half a century. It was originally introduced out of concern that civil servants might drink during work hours and students could consume alcohol right after classes.

This rule frequently inconvenienced tourists accustomed to more flexible policies elsewhere. Many travelers complained about the “dry” afternoon period in bars and restaurants, particularly in popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya.

Why Relax the Restrictions Now?

The decision to lift the afternoon ban is part of broader efforts to revitalize tourism in Thailand following challenging years. The country aims to regain its position as one of Southeast Asia’s top destinations, where visitors can fully enjoy their vacation experience.

The relaxation mainly applies to licensed establishments such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. Retail stores and supermarkets may still face some limitations, but the overall shift is toward greater flexibility for tourists.

“These changes are designed to make staying in Thailand more comfortable for foreign guests while maintaining social responsibility,” government representatives noted.

The new alcohol regulations in Thailand for 2025 have been welcomed by travelers. If you’re planning a trip, enjoying an afternoon cocktail on the beach or a beer at a bar will no longer be an issue. Remember to drink responsibly and follow local laws!
