Despite high irrigation potential, most agriculture in Africa still depends on rainfall and remains vulnerable to climate change.
The United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health has presented a new analytical report on the implementation of the strategy for irrigation development and water resources management in the African Union.
This is reported by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
The document emphasizes that expanding irrigation systems is an important step in adapting to climate risks and increasing crop yields.
However, such a process must be accompanied by consideration of environmental, social, and governance impacts.
These include landscape change, pollution, redistribution of power in communities, and issues of equitable access to water.
The strategy developed by the African Union Commission proposes a systematic and structured approach to water resources management.
Its implementation could be a game changer in transforming the continent’s agriculture and achieving food security.
Professor Kaveh Madani emphasized that “transforming water, energy, and environmental systems is key to unlocking Africa’s agricultural potential and reducing climate vulnerabilities.”
