Hope for millions of patients with neurodegenerative diseases gives Australian researchers from the WEHI Institute. This was reported on the website of the institution.
Scientists have discovered a chemical compound that successfully preserves cell life by affecting the protein that is responsible for cell death. It destroys mitochondria and contributes to the death of neurons.
The discovered compound could form the basis of new developments to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
“We were thrilled to discover a molecule that targets BAX and stops its activity without affecting other cells,” said study co-author Prof. Guillaume Lessen.
To date, there is no treatment that can completely stop the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
The discovery of Australian scientists provides new opportunities for the development of drugs that can significantly slow the development of these diseases and improve the quality of life of patients.
Now on the planet, about 50 million people live with Alzheimer’s disease. And their number will increase. Parkinson’s disease affects more than 6 million people worldwide.
