Scientists have managed to create a chip that allows you to turn a smartphone into a pocket scanner. This is reported by Interesting Engineering.
The new chip is inspired by Superman’s X-ray vision and allows you to see objects and their structure behind an obstacle, such as a wall.
It can be used to look at the contents of parcels. However, the scanning depth is limited to only 2.5 centimeters.
It is reported that the developers plan that the next version of the chip will have a scanning depth of about 12 cm.
This technology can be used not only in domestic situations, but also in medicine. The chip consists of an array of three transceivers operating at 300 GHz.
They emit signals in the millimeter range of electromagnetic frequencies, which are invisible to the human eye and safe for humans.
The chip does not require optical elements, which simplifies its integration into mobile devices.
