Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who unleashed a bloody war in the center of Europe, flew to the capital of Mongolia.
As you know, Ulaanbaatar recognizes the jurisdiction of the ICC, which means it should have arrested Putin, as there is a warrant out for him.
However, he was instead ceremoniously greeted by an honor guard and left the local airport quietly.
Putin arrived at the invitation of Mongolia. According to media reports, the country’s authorities assured him that they would not arrest him.
His visit is scheduled to participate in events to mark the 85th anniversary of the victory of Soviet and Mongolian armed forces over the Japanese on the Khalkhin-Gol River.
Mongolia has been a party to the International Criminal Court since 2000 and ratified the Rome Statute in 2003.
In 2023, a representative of Mongolia was elected as a judge of the ICC for a 2-year term. On March 17, 2023, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Putin.
Putin is destroying international law with his occupation of Crimea and other Ukrainian regions.
For him, the warrant was a challenge to prove that he can ignore not only the norms of international law, but also the norms of international justice.
His visit to Mongolia is to set a precedent to prove the destruction of the system of international law.
