It has become known that people with high IQs make more accurate predictions and make better decisions for the future.
This conclusion was reached by scientists from the School of Management at the University of Bath. The work was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
As part of the work, the researchers analyzed data from a national survey of older people in England (ELSA aging study).
Participants were asked to estimate their likelihood of living to a certain age.
Their predictions were then compared with statistical calculations of life expectancy from the UK’s National Statistics Service.
Factors such as health, lifestyle, and even genetic predisposition to longevity were taken into account.
It turned out that people with the lowest IQs (bottom 2.5%) made more than twice as many prediction errors compared to those in the top 2.5% in terms of intelligence.
Meanwhile, highly intelligent participants showed greater accuracy and stability in their estimates.
The study also found a link between genetic markers associated with intelligence and educational success and the ability to make accurate predictions.
This confirms that the level of cognitive ability can directly influence the quality of decisions a person makes in life.
