White phosphorus is instantly inflamed by oxygen. The substance burns at very high temperatures and is difficult to extinguish.
In the 20th century, the US military also used it against enemy troops.
Human rights activists are also known to object to its use near civilians.
This chemical can cause burns to human skin, it can also cause damage to the lungs and eyes.
White phosphorus ammunition is not illegal, and white phosphorus is not classified as a chemical weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
But international law requires that it not be used in areas with civilian populations.
