New York state lawmakers will consider a bill to ban direct sales of Tesla electric cars in the state.
Democratic Senator Pat Fahey wants to revoke the authorization for five Tesla outlets in New York, Politico reports.
Tesla sells more electric cars in the U.S. and New York than any other manufacturer.
The company avoids the traditional dealer model of selling through third parties under franchise agreements.
Instead, Tesla sells electric cars directly to consumers.
In New York, Tesla was allowed to continue operating five locations for direct sales in 2014.
But now the state’s powerful auto dealers want to ban the Tesla model altogether.
Elon Musk’s close association with President Donald Trump has become politically toxic for Democratic lawmakers, the publication notes.
“No matter what we do, we’re going to have to take it from Elon Musk. He’s part of the effort to take it back,” Fahey said.
