It has been reported that one of Rome’s landmarks, the Conti Tower, has partially collapsed in the city center.
The tower has recently been undergoing restoration work. The collapse occurred while four workers were inside. This was reported by Corriere della Sera.
One of them was hospitalized in serious condition, while two others suffered minor injuries. The fourth remained trapped under the rubble.
About two hours later, as rescuers were trying to pull out the trapped worker, another collapse occurred. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.
Construction of the Conti Tower began in the ninth century, and for a long time it served as the ancestral residence of the influential Conti family.
In the 13th century, it was completely rebuilt by order of Pope Innocent III, who came from this family.
