For 47 years in prison, $1.4 million dollars

In Japan, a man served 47 years in prison and received this 1.4 million dollars. This is reported by The New York Times.

Iwao Hakamada, a former boxer from Japan, was wrongly convicted of murdering four people.

It is reported that in 2014, new evidence was discovered in the murder case.

The investigation found that blood on clothes found near the victims’ home did not belong to Hakamada.

In the past, these facts were the main evidence in the case for the murder charge.

Therefore, investigators considered the evidence fabricated. The man was then released from death row.

The Japanese man was finally acquitted 10 years later, and in 2025 he filed a lawsuit demanding compensation.

According to the court ruling, Hakamada will receive $83 for each day he was incarcerated.

However, his lawyer said the authorities had committed a crime that could not be atoned for with even 200 million yen.
