An opposition politician has been arrested in Turkey

It became known that a popular opposition politician and mayor Imamoglu was arrested in Istanbul.

Law enforcement authorities have initiated a large-scale operation in Istanbul, the Sabah newspaper reported.

The operation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in connection with an investigation into corruption allegations in the capital’s municipality.

On Monday, Istanbul University decided to revoke Imamoglu’s diploma, preventing him from running for the country’s presidency.

The Istanbul mayor was the only candidate in the primaries from the largest opposition People’s Republican Party (CHP).

It is also reported that in Istanbul there are problems with mobile communication and messengers do not work. Metro stations are closed.

The mayor of Istanbul and many of his associates have been taken to court. The court is expected to choose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest.

The Istanbul governor’s office said in a statement that demonstrations are banned between March 19 and 23.
