A former British Museum employee has been accused of stealing nearly 2,000 exhibits. The employee stole precious stones, gold jewelry and other exhibits

An employee of the British Museum was accused of stealing 2,000 exhibits

It became known that the British Museum went to court against the former curator, who allegedly stole hundreds of artifacts from the collections.

This is told by the publication Independent.

It was also stated that after the theft, he put everything for sale on the Internet.

Peter Higgs was fired in July 2023 after more than 1,800 artifacts were found to have disappeared.

Attorneys for the museum claim Higgs “abused a position of trust” by stealing antique gems, gold jewelry and other exhibits from the vaults over a ten-year period.

Judge Geezer Williams ordered Higgs to list or return all items in his possession within four weeks.

She also ordered his eBay and PayPal records to be disclosed.

The museum says it has managed to recover 356 missing items and hopes to recover more.

It is also reported that the accused tried to “cover his tracks” by using fictitious names and creating false documents.

He manipulated museum records by selling artifacts for less than their value.

The case is still under separate police investigation and Higgs has not been charged with a crime.
