An AI app for communicating with the dead. This new technology will help people communicate with deceased relatives in real life

2wai AI App Lets You Talk to Deceased Loved Ones via Holographic Avatars

Published on November 15, 2025 — In a breakthrough blending artificial intelligence and digital memory, Los Angeles-based startup 2wai has launched a mobile app that turns three minutes of video into an interactive holographic avatar of a deceased loved one.

The technology promises “eternal conversations,” but it’s already sparking heated ethical debates. Daily Mail was among the first to spotlight the viral demo.

How the 2wai App Works: From Video to Living Memory

Pronounced “two-way,” the 2wai app is currently in beta on iOS (Android version coming soon). Users record or upload a 3-minute video of any person — living or passed. The AI analyzes facial expressions, voice patterns, gestures, and speech style to generate a HoloAvatar that can chat in real time.

A promotional clip that racked up over 22 million views on X shows a pregnant woman consulting her late mother’s avatar about parenting. Later, the digital grandmother “talks” to her grandson — from school days to his own wedding. The tagline? “With 2wai, three minutes can last forever.”

Behind the Tech: Actor-Turned-Founder Calum Worthy

The brainchild of Canadian actor Calum Worthy (known for Disney’s “Austin & Ally” and Hulu’s “The Act”), 2wai positions itself as a “living archive of humanity.

” In an X post, Worthy wrote: “We’re building a social network of avatars where lost loved ones become part of tomorrow.” The company keeps its AI algorithms under wraps but emphasizes emotional preservation.

Ethical Storm: AI Avatars of the Dead vs. Psychological Risks

The concept instantly drew comparisons to the Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back,” where a widow revives her husband via AI. Critics label 2wai “demonic” and “dehumanizing.” MIT and Stanford ethicists warn of prolonged grief dependency and blurred lines between real and synthetic relationships.

“Therapeutic potential exists, but we risk erasing the natural boundary of loss,” a Stanford psychologist told Daily Mail.

The app is free with in-app purchases starting at $4.99 for premium features. Explore more cutting-edge AI breakthroughs on our site.

Should You Create a Holographic Chatbot of a Loved One?

Supporters see 2wai as a digital heirloom for grandparents’ stories. Detractors fear “zombification” of the dead. The choice is yours — but the future of memory is here. Share your thoughts in the comments!
