Adolf Hitler wins Namibia’s elections! A politician bearing the Führer’s name will once again lead the Oshana district—why are people voting for him?

Adolf Hitler Uunona Wins Re-Election for the Fifth Time in Namibia 2025

— Namibian politician Adolf Hitler Uunona has once again secured a landslide victory in the 2025 regional and local elections.

The 59-year-old representative of the ruling SWAPO party won more than 84% of the vote in Oshana constituency (formerly known as Ompundja), northern Namibia.

Why Does a Namibian Politician Have the Name Adolf Hitler?

Adolf Hitler Uunona has served as councillor of Oshana constituency since 2004. He has repeatedly explained that his father gave him the name in the 1960s — long before Namibia’s independence — without understanding its historical meaning.

At the time, Namibia (then South West Africa) was administered by apartheid South Africa, which had inherited many German colonial names and influences.

Uunona has stressed in numerous interviews: “I have nothing to do with Nazi ideology, the Holocaust, or the Third Reich. My wife calls me Adolf, colleagues call me Igor, and in official documents I use Adolf H. Uunona.”

2025 Election Results: Why Do Voters Still Support Him?

Despite some criticism over slow infrastructure development (poor roads, water shortages, and electricity problems), Uunona remains extremely popular. Key reasons for his continued success:

  • Lifelong membership and loyalty to SWAPO — the liberation movement that has dominated Namibian politics since independence in 1990
  • More than 20 years of experience as local councillor
  • Strong personal reputation as a former anti-apartheid activist
  • Deep-rooted voter loyalty to SWAPO in the northern regions

Local residents told the media: “For us he is just Adolf — our councillor. The name is just a name.”

Key Facts About Adolf Hitler Uunona

  • Born in 1965
  • Joined SWAPO as a youth activist during the liberation struggle
  • First elected councillor in 2004; now serving his fifth consecutive term
  • Became a global viral story after winning 85% in the 2020 elections
  • Officially shortens his name to “Adolf H. Uunona” in most documents

The story of Adolf Hitler Uunona proves that in Namibian politics, deeds matter far more than a name — even one of the most infamous in history.
