A tsunami-like cloud frightened vacationers in Portugal

An unusual cluster of clouds was observed off the coast of Portugal, which greatly frightened many people present and users of social networks.

The phenomenon in the sky has already been called ‘cloud-apocalypse’ or ‘cloud-tsunami.’ The Mirror writes about this.

In the footage you can see that the phenomenon resembles a sea wave, as if gradually rolling up on vacationers on the beach.

Many witnesses of what was happening tried to take pictures and realize whether it is now worth it to run from this place as far away as possible.

However, meteorologists say this phenomenon has long been known to experts who study clouds.

According to the British Bureau of Meteorology, the phenomenon observed by tourists on the shores of Portuguese beaches is known as arcus clouds.

Arcus clouds are spectacular long and thin clouds at low level that occur in association with severe thunderstorms.

And Portugal’s meteorological service said it has recorded disruptions in airflow with waves in the atmosphere known as internal gravity waves.

The probable cause of this phenomenon is the effects of the severe heat wave that has recently swept Europe.
