It became known that during the annual NATO exercise, the Saber Strike at the range in Poland killed a Spanish corporal.

This was reported by the press service of the Spanish Army on the platform X.

“The accident occurred during a tactical exercise with live firing,” as stated in the message.

Condolences to the family of the deceased were expressed by the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez and the head of the Polish Defense Ministry Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamish.

According to El Español, 43-year-old Spanish Army Corporal German Palacios died.

He belonged to a group of regular troops and had the Bronze Cross for Constancy in Service and a commemorative medal for Operation Balmis.

He traveled with his unit to Poland for a few days to participate in Saber Strike 2024 maneuvers. He was killed Monday at the Bemowo Piskie firing range due to a mortar malfunction.

An investigation has been opened to find out what happened. According to the Defense Ministry, the event occurred “while performing a tactical mission with live firing.”

It is not yet known what went wrong. An investigation is ongoing to try to determine where the mortar hit when the shell was launched and whether it was a grenade that killed the corporal.
