A powerful sandstorm has hit the American city of Phoenix in the state of Arizona, Azcentral reports.

More than 41 thousand people were left without light. The bad weather paralyzed the work of Sky Harbor International Airport.

The disaster hit the city and was accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Residents in a panic left their workplaces and ran to their cars; the streets were littered with garbage and broken branches.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said that because of the weather, three flights were canceled, 104 were delayed, and one aircraft was diverted to another airport.

According to employees of the air harbor, Sky Harbor was damaged. The extent of the damage is being determined by experts.

No information on casualties has been received. Local authorities are urging residents to stay indoors.
