Astronomers from the University of Amsterdam have discovered an unusual exoplanet, TOI-2431 b, where one year passes in 5.4 Earth hours.
It is located only 117 light-years from Earth. This is stated in a paper published on the website arXiv.
It is known that the neobachniy object was discovered with the help of the TESS space telescope (NASA).
According to scientists, a year on TOI-2431 is one of the shortest known periods of circulation of an exoplanet around its star.
For comparison, the Earth takes 365 days to circle the Sun, and TOI-2431 b during this time manages to make more than 1600 revolutions.
The planet is extremely close to its star – only 933 thousand kilometers (0.0063 astronomical units).
This proximity heats its surface to about 2000 Kelvin (about 1727 °C), which is enough to melt rocks and metals.
Although the planet’s size is similar to that of Earth, TOI-2431 b differs greatly in its characteristics.
Its radius is nearly one and a half times larger, and its mass is 6.2 times larger. The average density is 9.4 grams per cubic centimeter – much higher than Earth’s.
