It became known that in China, doctors for the first time in the history of medicine transplanted a pig’s lung to a person.
This operation was conducted as part of a study, the results of which were published by the journal Nature.
The material says that the operation was carried out on a 39-year-old man with a dead brain.
For transplantation, they used the lung of a special genetically modified pig. After transplantation, it remained viable for nine days.
But a day after transplantation, there were signs of fluid accumulation and tissue damage.
However, the authors of the paper attributed this to inflammation caused by the procedure.
Dr. Justin Chan from the Institute of Transplantology noted that the transplanted lungs are not yet able to independently support the patient’s life.
At the same time, he called the results obtained by Chinese doctors promising.
