It has become known that a North Korean soldier illegally crossed the border from North Korea into South Korea.
This happened on August 20 and was the second such case in the last two weeks. This is reported by The Guardian.
According to South Korea’s military, it detained “a North Korean suspect on the eastern front” and handed him over to the relevant authorities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the detainee was a staff sergeant.
The military said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, so details of the soldier’s flight and motives have not yet been released.
Earlier this month, a North Korean civilian also crossed the border, traversing the mouth of a river between the two countries to reach South Korea.
Crossing the North Korean border is very dangerous due to booby-trapped fields and the risk of being fired upon by North Korean soldiers, The Guardian writes.
Because of this, North Korean fugitives first run across the border with China and then look for opportunities to escape through a third country.
